Tetrahydrocurcumin vs Curcumin: What's the Difference?

Tetrahydrocurcumin (THC) is what your body makes after it absorbs curcumin. Curcumin is the bright yellow pigment from turmeric root; tetrahydrocurcumin is its colourless reduced metabolite. Taking THC directly skips the conversion step your gut and liver would otherwise perform.

The short version

Curcumin Tetrahydrocurcumin
Source Turmeric rhizome, directly Metabolite of curcumin, produced in the body or made for supplements
Colour Bright yellow-orange Off-white to colourless
Stains Yes, notoriously No
Chemistry Contains conjugated double bonds Those bonds are reduced (hydrogenated)
Stability at neutral pH Degrades relatively quickly More stable

Why the difference exists at all

Curcumin is poorly absorbed. What does get through the gut wall is rapidly metabolised, and one of the main products of that metabolism is tetrahydrocurcumin. In other words, a meaningful share of what circulates after taking curcumin is not curcumin any more.

That observation is what made THC interesting as an ingredient in its own right. If the body converts curcumin into THC anyway, supplying THC directly removes a variable.

What changes when the double bonds are reduced

The conjugated double-bond system in curcumin is responsible for its colour and for much of its chemical reactivity. Hydrogenating those bonds produces a colourless molecule with different stability characteristics. Published laboratory work has compared the antioxidant behaviour of the two forms, with THC often performing comparably or better in cell-free assays.

Laboratory antioxidant assays are not the same as an effect in a person, and we are not going to present them as one.

Which one should you look for on a label

If the goal is turmeric's traditional profile

A standardised curcuminoid extract delivers curcumin along with the related compounds demethoxycurcumin and bisdemethoxycurcumin. Absorption remains the practical constraint, which is why delivery format matters so much in this category.

If the goal is the metabolite specifically

A tetrahydrocurcumin product supplies THC directly. It also will not stain, which is a small but real practical difference for a daily supplement.

What we make

We offer both. MetaCurcumin 277x is a liquid nano-micelle curcumin formula with added tetrahydrocurcuminoids. TetraCurcumin Nano is tetrahydrocurcumin in a nano format, one liquid capsule per serving.

Common questions

Is tetrahydrocurcumin better than curcumin?

They are different molecules with different properties, not a straightforward upgrade. THC is more stable and colourless; curcumin is the compound the traditional evidence base was built on. Which suits you depends on what you are looking for.

Does tetrahydrocurcumin need black pepper?

Piperine is added to some curcumin products to slow metabolism. Formulas using micelle or nano delivery generally address absorption through the delivery system instead, which is why ours contain no black pepper.

Will it stain my teeth or clothes?

Tetrahydrocurcumin is colourless, so no. Curcumin will.
