Micronized Resveratrol: What It Means and Why It Matters

Micronized resveratrol is resveratrol ground to a much smaller particle size. Smaller particles have more surface area per gram, and since resveratrol is poorly soluble in water, surface area is what determines how quickly it can dissolve, which has to happen before any of it is absorbed.

Why particle size matters for a poorly soluble compound

Dissolution rate scales with surface area. Take a fixed mass of powder and grind it finer and the total surface exposed to intestinal fluid rises sharply, even though the mass is unchanged. For compounds that dissolve readily this is irrelevant. For resveratrol, which does not, it is one of the few levers available without changing the molecule.

Micronization typically brings particles into the low micron range. The powder looks and weighs the same; what changes is how fast it can go into solution.

Micronized is not the same as standardised

These are independent claims. A product can be micronized and impure, or pure and coarse. Only a certificate tells you which.

Where resveratrol comes from

Most supplemental resveratrol is extracted from Japanese knotweed (Polygonum cuspidatum) rather than grapes, simply because the concentration is far higher. That origin is also why emodin testing matters: emodin occurs naturally in the same plant and needs to be controlled for.

Common questions

Is micronized resveratrol better absorbed?

Micronization increases dissolution rate, which is a prerequisite for absorption. It does not overcome resveratrol's rapid metabolism, which is a separate issue covered on the bioavailability page.

Does micronized powder taste different?

Finer powders can feel smoother but the taste is unchanged. Capsules avoid the question entirely.
