EGCG and Antioxidant Chemistry: How Catechins Behave

EGCG's antioxidant reputation comes from its structure: it carries multiple hydroxyl groups arranged so it can donate hydrogen atoms readily. That is measurable chemistry in a test tube. What it means inside a person is a considerably more complicated question, and worth being straight about.

The chemistry, plainly

EGCG belongs to the flavan-3-ol family. Its galloyl group and multiple hydroxyl groups let it neutralise free radicals by donating hydrogen, and it can also chelate metal ions such as iron and copper that would otherwise participate in radical-generating reactions.

In cell-free antioxidant assays, EGCG performs strongly. This is where most "more powerful than vitamin C" style comparisons originate.

Why test-tube antioxidant numbers mislead

A high score in a chemical assay does not transfer directly to a person. Absorption, metabolism and distribution all intervene, and plasma catechin concentrations after an oral dose are far below assay conditions. Current thinking in the literature also leans towards polyphenols acting substantially through cell signalling rather than by direct radical scavenging alone. Treat any antioxidant ranking on a supplement label as chemistry, not physiology.

What "synergy" does and does not mean

Synergy between antioxidants is a real phenomenon in chemistry: one compound can regenerate another after it has been oxidised, vitamin C and vitamin E being the classic pairing. Similar interactions have been described for catechins in laboratory settings.

What cannot be inferred from that is that combining supplements produces a proportional benefit in a person. That is a separate claim requiring separate evidence, and it usually does not exist.

Stability matters more than most labels admit

EGCG degrades with heat, light, oxygen and alkaline pH. An extract's real-world antioxidant content depends on how it was processed, packaged and stored, not only on the number printed on the bottle. This is one more reason batch testing is the practical answer to a theoretical question.
